[Article Updated - Go to the end of the post] Wikipedia has decided to join the blackout protest of SOPA by shutting down the English variant of Wikipedia for 24 hours on Wednesday. Wikipedia is one of the most-trafficked sites in the world. If you’ll visit any Wikipedia page on 18th January, you’ll will be greeted by an open letter encouraging you to contact Congress in protest.

Most of the Internet users are all well aware of SOPA (Stop Online Privacy Act) and they understand that Internet and free speech will never be the same if this bill is allowed to pass. That’s why they are with Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, and ten other major companies who are joining the shutdown protest against SOPA. No one will be able to access any article of Wikipedia from 5 AM GMT on Wednesday until 5 AM GMT on Thursday.
The blackout protest will affect millions of Wikipedia lovers around the world. That’s why someone has come up with a Chrome extension that will help you to access the majority of the content from English version of Wikipedia on the blackout day. Offline Wiki is an extension that will let you access Wikipedia articles offline on your browser.

Once you’ve installed this extension, you’ll be asked to either download 13 MB of data that contains the most popular Wikipedia articles or 1 GB data that contains almost all the articles. When download completes, you can now access Wikipedia articles without the need for an Internet connection. You can install Offline Wiki Chrome extension from here.

You can also access Wikipedia articles by downloading Okawix on your computer. Okawix is an offline reader that allows you to download the content of Wikimedia projects, with or without pictures, in order to then access it offline. It’s available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android operating system.
PS: With this post, I’m just trying to help people who can’t live without Wikipedia, even for a day. Also, by shutting down the encyclopedia for 24 hours, Wikipedia is only trying to raise awareness about the SOPA Bill so that more and more people know about it and come out against SOPA.
Update:
Yesterday when I made this post, I didn’t know how would Wikipedia take the English variant offline in protest. But today, a Wikimedia spokesman confirmed that the mobile version of the website will remain online at en.m.wikipedia.org. Also, if you want to access the English variant of online encyclopedia on your desktop, just disable Javascript in your browser and the website will be accessible again.
