Is Aakash the real name of the tablet?

As you all know that this tablet aimed at Indian students. The HRD minister, Kapil Sabil, has announced that it would be first distributed to a few colleges/universities in India. Although he hasn’t given any college list. The tablet will be sold with the name UbiSlate7 to general public.

I’m a Student in India. How to get Aakash Tablet?

As I said above, Kapil Sibal has not given any list of colleges/universities to which the tablet will be distributed. If you’re a student, ask your college management if Aakash Tablet will be provided to the students. If your college/university has been selected for the initial distribution of Aakash tablet, you can get it for just Rs 1750 from your college.

When will it be available to the selected colleges/universities?

The company promises that a retail version of the tablet will come up in November. Around 100,000 computer tablets will be made available by January 2012. If you’re not a student, you have to wait till January.

I’m not a Student. How can I get this tablet?

The tablet will be sold to general public with the name UbiSlate7. It’ll be available in market very soon. As of now, you can only book your tablet at the official webpage. Visit the tablet official website and fill the form on the right hand sidebar. As soon as the tablet is available in the market, one of their counsellors will contact you over the details you’ve provided while filling the form. I still don’t have any idea whether it will be available at local stores, just like other gadgets. Note that it’ll cost you around Rs 3000 if you buy the tablet online.

Will Aakash Tablet support regular SIM Card?

It’s one of the most asked questions on Aakash Tablet. According to the official webpage, the student’s version of the tablet won’t have SIM card support. It will only have Wifi support. But Ubislate7 will have the regular SIM card support, so that we can make phone calls, messaging and all other things we do on normal mobile handsets.

Will it be available on online stores like Flipkart or Letsbuys?

Aakash tablet is still in manufacturing stage. They will start the distribution process in selected colleges/universities once they have done with the adequate production. You can book your tablet at the official webpage and just wait for the launch in the commercial market. Later on when it’s rolled out in the market, you can also buy it through popular online web stores such as ebay and flipkart.

Will it have access to Android Marketplace?

It’s quite a let down for many as it won’t have access to Android Market place. Although it will come with pre-installed apps. You can also download content from Government Sakshat portal.

On the features page of official Aakash portal, it is mentioned that

    Applications Galore with Android 2.2:
    Games
    Productivity software: Office suite
    Educational software
    ————————–
    Over 150,000 apps!
    ————————–

But you have mentioned that “………. it won’t have access to Android Market place.” . Without access to Android Market place, how we can use 150,000 apps in Android tab. [This questioned arose while searching for apps that can be used from Government Sakshat Portal, as you have mentioned.]

I think you’re talking about Ubislate 7 that’ll be available in the commercial market for general public. As I heard, Aakash Tablet (Not Ubislate 7), which is aimed at the students won’t have Android Market and that puts thousands of applications out of a student’s reach.
