First of all I want to clear you what is Automatic Direct Messages? Let me tell you by an example. Suppose a person follows you and you get the notification in your email then you click on the link that takes you to that person’s twitter profile. You follow back if you find something interesting.
As soon as you press the follow button, you get a direct message from that person having this text mostly “Thanks for following and view my website Website link”. This is automatic response used by many twitter users now. Sometimes it irritates me and force me to unfollow that person. I think using automatic direct messages is not a bad idea but how to use it shows the manners. I got 4 types of automatic direct messages till now. I am explaining which one is good and which one is worst.
Case 1: I think it is best method of using automatic direct messages in a good manner. When I receive “Thanks for following me lets connect on facebook facebook link”.
It shows that person is trying to connect you in more ways and then we may be good friends in future. So if you want to use automatic direct messages you should use it in a manner like this case.
Case 2: Sometimes I receive “Thanks for following me. Have a nice day”. 
It is ok but something is missing. People don’t want to waste their time to read these types of direct messages. You should add you social networking profile link to this message.
Case 3: I don’t know why people using this type of message in automatic direct messages. The message is “Thanks for following me. Have a look at my blog blog url”.
The person that is following you have already viewed your profile then why sending the same info same as your bio description. So avoid this type of messages.
Case 4: These are spammers who sends these types of messages in the screenshot below.
Sometimes these people immediately unfollow after the automatic direct message is sent. They just want to send direct messages with their websites. I immediately block them.
